============================================================================== Title : Drill Site (Duke3D Dukematch) Filename : drilsite.map Author : Nukeface (doss0009@gold.tc.umn.edu) Description : A little something different here, I had some of my friends play it and they each wrote up a description/review of it. Here they are, exactly as they were given to me, the author's misspellings included. **************************************************************************** Dave (ever the optimist, has grown to hate every job he's had) When I was first shown the Drilsite stage I wasn't that impressed. The stage itself is not that great to look at. There is no real cool theme that wears off in 10 minutes of play time. It is just a level that is done with only one thing in mind...Hours and Hours of fun. It is like Sega Genesis, the graphics suck compared to Super Nintendo but the play control is what makes me want to play Sega for longer periods of time. I play tested the level with 2,3 and 4 other players. Both times I was impressed with the way things were set up. With two other players there was a little time to breath in between deaths. With three other players the time between deaths was greatly reduced and the amount of time to breath was at a minimum. With four other players, I didn't live much longer than with 3 others playing but there were mas more cannon fodder around which meant, if I wanted to either gear up for a battle or just take a rest there were alot of other players to take the place of me when it came to dying. To be honest, I am super sick of these First Person Shoot-em-up games and I have also played a whole lotta hours of net play with them. This board was so much fun that after 3 hours of straight play and over 600 deaths (with 5 players total) I did not want to stop. Even though I died 199 times (at least 50 were suicides), I had over 100 kills which made me want to keep playing. The board is real simple, there is a drill is the center (hence the name). There are a couple of other hallways and lifts which are located in generic places. A cat walk which surrounds the outer edge of the whole board which makes it a semi-two level board. You are always in the action and there are always chances to shoot at so-and-so. But there is some vertical aiming to be done which makes it interesting to stand up top and shoot at unsuspecting victims. All of the registered weapons are located somewhere on the board and the devastator is located on a really slow noisy lift which tells everyone where you are when you want that particular weapon. All in All I rate it 85% out of 100% pure fun. **************************************************************************** Steven (a really really good composer) If it wasn't Nukeface Killing me it was Spacehog... The drilsite is an awsome leavel for death match in Duke nuke 'em. It has plenty of open space and plenty of places to hide... While I was playing the leavel I found it easy to bump into opponets that wanted to fry me and equally easy to hide from them... All and all a great Nuke 'em leavel Damn my spelling Steven-Skull **************************************************************************** Ben (who wastes his free time maintaining http://cindyc.upx.net) The board is really cool, lots of action. The powerful weapons are hard enough to get that there is more strategy along with the total mayhem. The only thing the board lacks is some toys like Holoduke and Steroids. Ben *************************************************************************** Kirk (Ruler of Kirkland in southern Iillinois) Review of DRILSITE.MAP by Kirk Hagberg =============================================================== First was DOOM and there was joy! Then came DOOM clones which failed in comparision and angered hardcore gamers. They were stuck playing (yet enjoying) DOOM deathmatch and ripping their freinds to shreads!! Then came an exciting and humorous DUKE NUKEM 3D. Once again there was joy!!! The only part missing was a killer deathmatch board that up to 8 freakin' friends could create a massive carnage of bodys and delightful death. Ladies and Gents, Mr. Dossett has created that board! DRITESITE is a thoughtout, well designed arena of creative obstacles and elevators. What do you look for in a deathmatch board? Open areas? Hiding places? DRILSITE delivers. Network your PC's NOW!!! Get as many friends as possible, and get this MAP crankin'. You won't be disappointed! Sabotage *************************************************************************** Nukeface (Your humble narrator) This map is designed to look like some sort of futuristic drill site. The basic shape is a large relatively open square. In the middle of the map is the drill, and around the edges, is a raised catwalk. There is a computer station monitoring the drill, boxes that haven't all been unpacked, some scaffolding is being set up that would have allowed instant access to the drill if the explosion hadn't killed the workers who were setting it up. The support trusses for the drill provide some cover, as do the elevator shafts in two of the corners. It sounds really simple, but it still has it's comlexities. All of the weapons are in this map, but fear not, every time I've played it, I've had a relatively even number of kills with each weapon. Since it's mostly open spaces, the shinker only is effective at close range, and if you're shunk on the catwalks, you can always drop down to ground level to have a better chance of evading your assailant amongst the various obstacles below. The rocket launcher is very difficult to get, and due to the layout, is really only effective at medium-close range. pipe bombs work wonders on the 3 elevators, but since they have limited range, and can be caught, they can be used against their thrower. The devastator spreads alot at long range, so it's easy to injure, but difficult to kill your opponents with it. the open area in the middle is great for laser bombs. A nasty trick is to place one at one side of the map on the catwalks, run to the other side, and set it off when an opponent ducks under it. The shogun is nice since there are many up-close-and-personal situations, especially on the elevators, but since there are also alot of long distance shots, the chaingun is great for wearing opponents down. one of the strong points about this map is that it is easy to run away, but you are still almost always a sitting duck if someone is in the right place. There is no one spot that will guarantee supremacy, every where you go, there are at least 2 ways you can get killed, but usually more than 2 ways to kill others. there is almost constant combat, but it is possible to avoid most opponents for a while if you really try. So far we've played this with 2, 3, 4 and five players. It worked great with each of those different combinations of players. When we played this with five players, it was amazing, we played through more than 850 total deaths before people realized how late it had gotten. on other stages, we usually quit after 200 or so total deaths, but on this stage, even after that many deaths, it was still fun, the action hadn't slowed down or gotten monotonous. **************************************************************************** Ok boys and girls it's story time: Story: Dazed, you struggle to your feet and gaze with blurred vision at your surroundings. The first thing you notice is a splitting pain in you head and ringing in your ears. Shaking off the disorientation, you struggle to rememeber who you are, "clone laborer rs-232". The small microchip embedded in your spine would confirm this if you could see it. What happened, and where is everyone? The drill must have hit a volitile gas pocket and the resulting explosion was what flattened you. All the equipment appears To be in working order, the gigantic drilling rig out in the middle of the site appears to be functional as it is still turning, and the computers moniroring it give all appearances of being operational. The guard who is usually in this corner is nowhere to be found, but his shotgun is. The weaker humans who hide behind their guns couldn't handle the blast, either vaporized or teleported out, you don't care, all that matters is that he's gone. Realizing that this my be your one chance at freedom, you grab the shotgun and look for a way out. Exuberance fills you at the prospect of freedom. You pause for a second and remember that clone workers have emotional restraint chips installed, how can you be happy? The torrent of new emotion nearly overwhelms you, the searing pain in your skull begins throbbing, pulsing, ripping, tearing, rapidly shredding your sanity, then something pops, a release of pressure and the pain is gone. "Ahh, much better", you think as you smile at your metallic friend The Shotgun. Your left eye starts twitching a little and you find yourself fighting an overwhelming desire to fall in to a giggling fit. You're just about to give into that urge when suddenly RAGE takes over. "THEY did this to me, Stole my freedom" you think while gritting your teeth, "They're gunna die for that". You round a corner and see movement, is it a guard, or annother worker? better not take any chances. Two quick barks of the shotgun drops the worker. Staring down at his still twitching, now bleeding body you think out loud, "He would've told the guards about me". You contemplate your actions, "Death suits him better than it does me". A flash of light and the distinct sound of a teleport tell you that the system cloned a new worker to replace the one you killed. But who was cloned? Me? ME! Damn! Since he is an exact duplicate, that means his restraint chip is damaged, making him capable of rage as well. Realizing that you have more than just your freedom at stake, you embark on a carnage filled fight for survival.... Additional credits to : My reviewers.
