*DukeGC v1.0* *What is it?* DukeGC is an MS-DOS based program that allows you to play up to 8 player Duke Nukem 3D (with the registered version of DukeGC) over any WorldGroup or MajorBBS system running Game Connection. With the shareware version you can only play up to 3 player Duke Nukem 3D and you can only make 5 kills. The registered version of DukeGC allows up to 8 players and no limit on kills. *Requirements* Requirements to play are: - a copy of shareware or full Duke Nukem 3D - a modem - an account on a WG/MBBS system running Game Connection Highly recommended: - at least a 14.4k modem with a 16550 UART *How to configure settings/enter registration code* When you first run DukeGC you will be shown the configuration menu. This menu can also be accessed by using the key combination alt-c. Use the arrow keys to highlight different options and the return key to select that option. All configuration options- After you enter any information into any of the configuration options you will need to highlight the "Save" option by using the arrow keys and then press return. Also, if you don't want to save what you entered press escape and it will return that option to what it was before you changed it. Press escape again to return to the main menu. Setup Duke 3D - You need to enter the full path of your Duke 3D game (for example c:\duke3d). You can also use a map file or any additional arguements that you want. A value of 2 is recommended for "Fewer Packets". Setup Modem - You will need to select your com port by using the left and right arrow keys. You will select the baud rate in the same way. For the init string you just type in what it should be and if you need to go back use the backspace key. It is recommended that in your init string you enable error correction and hardware flow control (see your modem manual for instructions on how to do this). The IRQ value *does not* need to be changed unless you use a non-standard IRQ for your modem. Enter Reg Code - This is only if you have purchased a registration code to register DukeGC. Enter the name exactly as it appears (the name is case-sensitive), then enter the registration code. Save the information. If you recieve the message "Invalid registration code!", then you entered the wrong code or maybe you didn't put the name in exactly as it appears on the email/mail you received. *How to play* The shareware version is limited to 3 players and 5 kills. That means if there is just one person in the channel that doesn't have the registered version, the game will be limited to 3 players. After someone with the shareware version makes 5 kills, they will stop sending information which will result in a "Timed out." error for all players. This error will stop the current game. It is recommended to enable error correction and hardware flow control before connecting. Also, to get the best possible game, all players should have the same connect bps rate and modem settings. You can access and edit the dialing directory by pressing the key combination alt-d. To play you connect to a WG/MBBS system and start or join a channel in Game Connection. Set the game mode to GCP mode. When all players are in the channel, have the moderator of the channel type "start". After this, someone has to press the key combination alt-s to start the game. This person is the game host. It is recommended that the person with the highest CPU rating host the game. If for some reason you need to stop, press escape and all players will be returned to chat mode in the the game channel. *Other features* There are a few other features (such as shelling to dos) in DukeGC. Press F1 to get a listing of them. *Error messages* If you get the message "Duplicate registration codes found." when DukeGC is searching for other players, it means that at least 2 people in the game are using the same registration code, which they are not supposed to do. Have the person(s) that didn't pay for the code remove it or leave the channel. All other error messages are self-explanatory. *How do I register?* A registration code is $15 (US), and this allows up to 8 player Duke Nukem 3D to be played (assuming all other players also have a registered copy of DukeGC) with no limit on kills. The registration code will also work for any future versions (upgrades, bug fixes, etc.) of DukeGC. See ORDER.TXT for more info about registering. *Where to find DukeGC* The latest version of DukeGC can be found on my web page at: http://www.doitnow.com/~splat/dukegc.html *Distribution* Please upload/transfer the shareware version of DukeGC wherever you wish, as long as all original files remain unmodified.
