Duke Nukem 3D from 3D Realms is a 3D virtual reality point-of-view immersion game along the lines of Doom and Doom II from id Software. The gameplay is similar to Doom (i.e. run around, collect weapons, armour, health and access cards, shoot the enemies, find the secrets, etc) but the game has many features that set it apart from Doom and other clones. You can look up, down and over your shoulder, you can squat and jump, you can fly (with the jetpack) and go under water. Objects can be damaged by gunfire and explosions (bullet holes are visible in walls, etc). There are mirrors. Sloping floors, and multiple levels at the same position in the plan, are also possible (they were not possible in Doom or Doom II). This freely distributable limited version contains the first of three "episodes", with six levels and with three weapons missing (the full version is US$40). It supports single player and multiple player via serial link, modem, or network. The game has some adult content (but no full nudity) which can be turned off via the "parental lock". The default resolution is 320x200 but other resolutions can be used with a VESA driver such as universal VESA driver UNIVBE (shareware). In 320x200 mode it gets a similar frame rate to Doom. The game _may_run under Win 95, OS/2, etc but is only "supported" under DOS. The minimum system is a 486DX2-66 with 8MB of RAM. It will not run on a 386. Recommended system is a Pentium 75 or Pentium Pro system with 16MB of RAM and a PCI video card, or better. Archive contains four 1.44MB files and an install program so you can create a four disk installation set. This is version 1.1, February 1996. This version fixes saved game bug (saved games from version 1 are incompatible), adds mouse aiming and crosshair cursor and various other gameplay improvements and additions.
