Quake 2 Color Skins 1.0 ----------------------- About this file --------------- A lot of people have complained about the removal of top and bottom colors in Quake 2, asking how games will be able to be played, since all of the id Software included skins are mainly shades of brown, and hard to distinguish at a distance. To address this problem, I have made up a set of 14 skins, based off the "grunt" skin by id Software, that coorespond to the 14 basic colors from Quake. The names are 0_0, 1_1, 2_2, 3_3, 4_4, 5_5, 6_6, 7_7, 8_8, 9_9, 10_10, 11_11, 12_12 and 13_13. If you haven't figured it out, the naming scheme is the same as what you'd put for the color command in Quake. For example, "color 4 4" would be skin 4_4. Also, the "portrait" for each skin has been set to the skin color to make it easy to tell someone's skin color/team at a glance from the scores screen. Installation ------------ To install, simply unzip into your Quake 2 male skins directory, which is the directory "/baseq2/players/male" under your Quake 2 directory. To set your skin in Quake 2, use either command "skin male/skinname" or use the Multiplayer->Player Setup menu. How it was done --------------- I made these skins using Photoshop for the editing and Paint Shop Pro to convert the final skins to the Quake 2 palette and save them, since I have yet to figure out how to get Photoshop to save a skin that Quake 2 (or Quake for that matter) likes (if anyone can help me with this, please send along an email). Future Plans ------------ The way I have set this up makes it easy to put together any possible combination of top/bottom color. However, given there are 196 (14*14) total combinations, I decided not to do them all by hand :). If I find it necessary (or can find a way to speed up the process), I eventually put out a pack of all possible skins. Also, this set obviously only works for the male player model. I do possibly plan on creating a set of skins for the female model next.
