Quake Map Launcher Utility Version 1.0 Copyright (c) November 1997. Thank you for using my Quake Map Launcher Utility, henceforth referred to as "Launcher". I wrote Launcher because I was tired of having to load maps via Quake's console and felt that there had to be a better way! I thus took up the task of writing a utility that would allow users to select a Quake map and then to launch the selected map. To install the Launcher program, simply unzip the Quake Map Launcher.exe to a directory of your choice and then run it. The first thing that you should do is to go to the "Options" menu and tell the program where your copy of Quake resides. If you don't do this, and instead load a map and try to run it, Launcher will automatically open a dialog box asking you where the Quake program is. The main window consists of a small area that will load a screenshot of the selected map, if one is available and in .jpg format. I did this because I like to see a screenshot of the map I want to play so that I can get a "feel" of what the map looks like, plus I find it an easy way to remember a map by a screenshot rather than by a text description, which brings us to the "Map Info" button. This button will load a .txt file corresponding to the map's name, i.e. if you load a map named "Mymap.bsp" then the corresponding file "Mymap.txt" will be loaded. You can then read the author's details on the map. PLEASE NOTE: the corresponding screenshot .jpg file and the .txt file must be in the same dir where the map is stored, i.e. c:\quake\id1\maps When you want to play the map, click on the "Launch" button. The skill settings are available, but will not be used if the selected map does not supported difficulty level selection. The "Use GLQuake" check box is there so that if you have a 3D card able to run GLQuake, you can play the map using it if the check box is selected. Other than having a reg. version of Quake, the only other program that you need is the latest version of WinQuake which Launcher will use by default. WinQuake can be found on most Quake web sites. This program, written using Visual Basic 5.0 Enterprise Edition, may also need the latest VBRUN.DLL, which can be found on any site with Windows files. I hope that you like this program, so please email me at valhalla@sk.sympatico.ca if you like it and why, and more importantly, even if you don't like it and why! Here are a few things that I plan to add in future releases: 1. Support of Hexen II, QuakeII, Jedi Knight maps. This should not be too hard for the first two games. I am currently working on the JK map extension. 2. Support for. pak files 3. Support for the levels already in Quake. I left this out as most ppl, I think, do not play the Quake levels once they have completed the game, but I could be wrong! Once again, any suggestions will be considered. Thanks for reading this file. Donald Cathcart
