====================================================================== JakFrost's Broadside Demo 2 ====================================================================== Date Recorded: 1999-08-13 23:00 UTC Game Name: Starsiege Tribes Game Version: 1.8 Demo Time: 3 minutes Mission Type: Capture The Flag Mission Name: Broadside Player Name: JakFrost Email: jakfrost(at)planetstarsiege(dot)com Website: http://www.planetstarsiege.com/tactical/ Displayed Tactics: Mortar Jumping ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Description ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a demo which was very long overdue, but finally here it is. Mortar jumping on Broadside with an inventory station and also a shield pack. When you jump with the inventory station you can get to the front of the enemy's base, then do a disc jump to the top of the enemy base and plant your stuff there to resupply. When you jump with the shield pack you can get to the roof of the enemy's base if the jump is done perfectly, if not then you should still be able to get to the front of the enemy's base. It is not necessary to use the energy pack on this map when using a heavy and mortar jumping since you could be using a better pack, such as a shield pack to extend your life. Also, in the very beginning of this demo I show how to eliminate the enemy turret in the first few seconds of the game with just 3-mortars. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mortar Jumping, The Right Way! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are the detailed instructions for learning and performing mortar jumps. These instructions are for people who don't know which way to point the mortar launcher to do mortar jumps or for those people who have a chronic tendency of jumping just short of the enemy base. Don't be discouraged by mortar jumping just because you can't do it just yet. I remember back in the days before my long break away from this game I couldn't mortar jump for anything. I would always, and I mean always fall short of the enemy base no matter what I did or what I tried. My tribemates gave me tons of advice but no matter what I did I couldn't get it right. I myself became discouraged by my failures in mortar jumping and I never did it, not once during a game. That was back then, now it's a totally different story. I don't even bother with light armor attacks on many maps. I mortar jump my heavy ass with a shield pack or an inventory station right into the enemy base and put the smack down on their business every time. Not to brag or anything but my scores of 80+ kills a game without any captures occur quite often and this is because of mortar jumping. Also just to point out, this mortar jumping is also very useful on many other maps, such as Dangerous Crossing where you can shoot yourself over right onto the enemy base avoiding all those pesky lights and blow their base every single time without being intercepted, or even Stonehedge where you can mortar jump yourself with an inventory station to the top of the stonehedge and rain mortars onto the enemy or use it as a resupply waypoint for yourself when you go to attack their base in a heavy. This is what awaits you if you take the time and learn mortar jumping the right way. The benefits of mortar jumping by far outweigh and disadvantages due to the loss of a little life or the time it takes to learn and master this technique. Learn it, use it, love it! Alright, without further adieu here is how I relearned Mortar Jumping, the right way! First, forget all of those things that people told you or things that you saw them do. Their technique might work for them, that's good but I'll teach you how to do it easier, faster, better. First, what you need to do is of course be in a heavy armor with a mortar launcher and an inventory station on the Broadside map. I'll use Broadside as our test map since the distance between the bases will be used to judge your jumps. The reason why you should have the inventory pack with you is because this way you will weight yourself down so much that only the perfect mortar jump will get you to the enemy base. If you learn mortar jumping this way, with the inventory pack on your back, doing it without the pack will seem like a breeze and you will be able to get a higher success rate without the inventory station. Also, if you encode the instincts the right way now with the inventory station you will be able to mortar jump your way to the roof of the enemy's base instead of only the front like most other people. Trust me, use the inventory station or your training will take much longer. You'll be happier with your skills if you do it this way. Now, walk up to the last line on the floor tiles in front of your base. Look directly down at your feet, as down as you can go. Fire a mortar at your feet. Then quickly take one step right and one step forward so that the mortar is directly behind you. You have to be in front of the mortar, not on top of it directly, but in front of it. Not totally ahead of it, just a little in front of it while you are still standing on top of it. The reason why you must be a little in front of the mortar is because you use the explosion to provide you with the vertical momentum and also the horizontal momentum to make the jump. The jet packs on the heavy armor provide very little horizontal thrust, this is why you need the mortar to provide the thrust for you. The horizontal thrust from the explosion is much more important that the vertical thrust since the jet pack on the armor can correct a little for vertical momentum errors but not for horizontal. Now this is the most important part of all, without this you can kiss your jump good bye. You have to wait, wait, wait, wait just a little while. Yes, wait, you have to wait a little while. Don't just fire and jump, you have to wait. Did you get that, there is a wait period involved here. The time to wait is very close to 1-second. After a short little wait you should hit the jump and jetpack button at the same time. The mortar should explode at the exact moment that you hit the jump and jetpack buttons and you should go flying forward and up, more forward than up. If everything went well and you hit the sweet spot with your position over the mortar and with the wait period you should hit your mark and end up at the front of the enemy base. Now I want to talk a little more about the wait period. There is a sweet spot wait period that you have to hit in order to make the perfect jump. The wait time as I mentioned is very close to 1-second but not quite so. The way to tell that you hit the sweet spot is that you held yourself back long enough from jumping and jet packing so that the sound of the jetpack is heard at the exact moment when the mortar explodes. If you jump prematurely, you will hear the jetpack sound a little after the explosion, at this time you can just hit the suicide button and start over. Remember, hold yourself back long enough from jumping. If you can do that, you'll hit the sweet spot every time. That's it. Watch the demo a few more times and notice how I move and setup the jump. Then go on that map and practice, with the inventory station on your back. Practice and practice. Remember, you have to hold yourself back from jumping too early. I know it's hard to do sometimes and you end up falling into the pit of jumping too early, but you have to pull yourself back and hold yourself back from jumping too early. Now do it and learn it. You'll get good at it if you practice. Don't get discouraged because you couldn't jump, get back on the horse and try again. Follow the rules that I wrote down here for you. If you find yourself failing too many times in a row. Stop, take a break, get something to drink, relax, go slow and try again from the top. Enjoy and may the enemy Phear You! ______________________________________________________________________
