March 3, 1998 ======================================================================== * General Information * Title : LaGrange Pt 1 Starbase Filename : L1Base.bsp Author : Hafhead (Tony Hafner) Email Address : hafhead@geocities.com Web Page : http://www.geocities.com/~hafhead Additional Credits to : id Software for such a great game Ben Morris for Worldcraft Geoffrey DeWan for his compile tools Description : Deathmatch Quake II Level This is a large starbase comprised of two big pods and two smaller ones. There are hallways that connect these areas together. All weapons are present, but there are enough barriers around to make dodging BFG blasts possible in most places. As usual, I tried to provide both wide-open spaces for the claustrophobics and tight spaces for those who like close quarters. Enjoy your stay and don't forget to look out the windows for a killer view! ======================================================================== * Running the Map * Put L1Base.bsp into your maps directory (Quake2\baseq2\maps). Run Quake2, and bring down the console (by pressing ~). At the console, type "map L1Base". The game will start. For multiplayer games, start the game first. Then bring down the console and enter the map command. Each player must have the .bsp file in his/her map directory. ======================================================================== * Play Information * Single Player : Don't bother- there's nothing to kill Cooperative : No Deathmatch : Yes- 16 starts, and I'd recommend 5+ players Difficulty Settings : No New Sounds : No New Graphics : No New Music : No Demos Replaced : None * Construction * Base : New level from scratch Editor(s) used : Worldcraft, Wordpad, MS Word Known Bugs : None Build Time : People really track this? You are NOT authorized to put this level on any CD or distribute it in any commercial way without my permission. It must be kept together with this text file intact. * Other Info * This is my first Q2 level. It is the first in a series of 5 levels that share a common starbase theme. The performance of this level is a vast improvement over my past Quake levels. I have finally learned how to properly reduce visibility through blocking walls, and I feel I've done quite a good job of making things look good, play well, and still run well. The poly counts on this level are, for example, much lower than on id's official Quake 2 deathmatch levels. QVIS3 sucks. Really bad. I like the ability to use detail brushes to speed up compilation, but unfortunately id has used this feature as a replacement for writing a good Vis program. QVIS3 often decided that my view should be blocked by certain objects that didn't come anywhere near to actually doing so. At one point I had a grayout in the level- and the total visible poly count was under 40. I managed to fix it by changing the geometry of some of the objects in the room and by using detail brushes, but it was way more hassle than Q1 editing ever was. Of course, it didn't help that Worldcraft is so late in getting Q2 support. I had to add the detail flags to the map via Word. If you've ever done any text-editor work on maps, you know how much this sucks. ======================================================================== * Past Projects * If you like this level, you may want to see some of my other projects.
