OKay enough guys... heh. I do! We want to get this happening :) I hate THIS place First person to msg me gets a job at ion ...or maybe Garland? uh... Could you hire me as "general greater of mayhem" ? :) Mayhem and chaos expert. Next one who does that dies.. Okay... We're going to start. :) I think the chaos has died down . dont ask me any questions.. i just work here. Levelord: We'll start with you :).... ouch! Levelord: When did you start getting into level editing, and what attracted you to do it ? sorry levelord: DID YOU DO ONLY ONE LEVEL IN THE SHAREWARE DUKE NUKEM 3D VIDEO GAME?! Jan of 1994 doing levels for some game called... ...called... DOOM, I think I'm writtin' that one done, pal Levelord was actually a janitor at 3drealms.. cmon guys its not funny well, that wasn't exactly the job title, but the description is close Alright, Giggler.. how about you.. when did you start geting into editing... Ahhh...Doom - I remember that game...hmmm why don't you grab a bite to eat or something paradox Loki: I've been editing since Doom, but didn't take it too seriously until Quake began ...put something in your mouth! levelord: gotta keep you guys straight blow! .... ;) doh! hehe..Alright... Paradox: how about you.... When did you start editing... and what got you into it ? he hasn't yet! Woop loki: I started editing Wolf3d levels back in high school - Then went to doom. It consumed about 50% of my classtime doing sketches and stuff I saw some of paradox's doom maps.. that stuff doesn't count ;) levelord: oh yeah gig: allright hehe Paradox: just kidding man.. your Doom stuff rocked Paradox: Before you started editing professionally... how long did you actually spend perday editing levels ? loki: I would come home from my real job (sys admin at cray computer) and spend the rest of the night doing Doom maps - usually till 2 or 3am who knoes alot about irc nethacking? jezzzzzz Giggler: Well, keeping on the same thread... How long did you spend editing levels.. and what did you do before you found you editing obsession? :) Loki: before I was into editing, I was into playing.. I was a Doom fanatic. When I was at school and making quake maps, I would begin after classes at 3 Pm, and finish at about 5 Am while working Did I say 2am? I meant 6am that was for only a couple weeks though :) I stayed up until 7am! I never sleep ...and we lived in a box :) ...on the side of the road And Levelord: So... before you got into you're editing obsession... What did you do, and what sort of skills did you develope from that that helped you in your editing career. I had to be spoon fed me meals while working I was in software, aerospace stuff, and started playing that wicked, evil game DOOM, it was hook city from there on in "spoon fed"!?! ...I had to run a cathater to the bathroom and made a special spatula to pry myself from the chair Giggler: How do you get the inspiration for most of your levels ? from me! hu I've done some different stuff.. sometimes I look at real architecture, or I just play with textures until I find a set that gives me a feeling for a level and then there was this one time just as I was leaving the bathroom.. oh nevermind Levelord: same for you :) Where do you get your ideas for your levels? :) dreams, books, lots of movies ...and like Giggler, lots of times "shit happens" on the fly df Why don't you all just answer this one : An audience question: what sort of music do you listen to nails! marilyn manson! barry manilow NiN, Metallica, Garbage, Manson, Poe, (Chick bands), No doubt, Jewel, Peppers, lots of stuff NiN, lots of alternative. Right now I listen to Garbage a lot. I was the first map designer, for what it's worth. :) anything but rap or county Lots of fully orchestrated stuff when doing maps Levelord: I'll get your insight on this one: We're all into doing rotating brushes now. We note there's not a LOT of rotating brushes in the levels, they get used only at key points mostly... Is this becaus loki: Overuse is abuse, plan and simple plan=plain rotation was one of the last things we programmed, so there wasn't much time there's no "i" in "plan" people, that really is the true romero Another big questions I've heard alot of : What are the legal implication of us using hipnotics modifications and textures ? level: There is no "W" in "Team" as long as you don't sell anything of ours, I believe it's okay ...oh ya, thanks para using the hipnotic quakec and textures is the same deal with using the quake stuff loki: We will personally kill you :) ...there "brain" in "Atkins", either don't make a cd and sell it ) Yes, i am the ancient one. Q: what are their steps (if any) when deciding on an initial layout for a level? What do they strive to include/exclude in terms of environment? Romero: what are their steps (if any) when deciding on an initial layout for a level? What do they strive to include/exclude in terms of environment? I don't know what Hipnotic does when designing levels. :) easy, john, easy! sorry...replace "their" with "your" We usually look at what Romero had done, and dont do that. :) heheh LOL! heh Then why does the first map in Scourge look like my Base maps? Hmmm.... hehe Romero: The 'SuperSecret' in Quake, with the red logo, and 'TC - TW' written under it, whats it all about, who are the people, and what is the logo? oooh uhoh time to dance, girls! I CREATED THE BASE MAPS! REVEL IN MY BASE GRAPHICS! Romero: Ummm.. Sorry. Romero: a little cutting and pasting never hurts hee hee I MADE EM BETTER!! MUAHAHAHA oops Levelord: "The Lost Mines" has been an extremly popular level.... did you anticipate it would be that great of a level when building it. I think sCary is gonna die of a laugh attack over here The super secret is the Raven logo from Tim Willits, who created the Raven levels. The TW stands for Tim Willits and TC is the name of his sister, i believe (she helped) Richard always knows his levels will be great loki: never really think of the audience in that way, I just do the level, ya know easy, tom, easy! levelord is modest - we all know his stuff rocks :) what are you setting me up for now, paraone Okay.. Everyone: How long does it take you to create a level.... an how long do you spend a day editing ? ...go on, do it! uhh... hehe When i saw Scourge of Armagon, i was rocked down. It was the most amazing piece of level design i've seen in any game up to this point. I must learn from them. I agree romero :) * ParadoX blushes soon, my son, soon soon you will learn the ways * Romero slaps Romero around a bit with a large trout loki: sorry, we went off, didn't we... ...I'd say a week or two of 12 hour days So, a 12 hour day is normal for you guys... how much of that involes playing quake ? :) About 5 hours. Oh, you mean Hipnotic? I don't know. never played the game, myself has anyone ever played Duke Nukem? ...oh, sorry Alright.. another big one ... What can we expect next from Hipnotics new pack ? we aren't making another pack tits! the next pack is being made by Rogue Entertainment ...oh, I am sorry we are making a game ...was that out loud? haha levelord, wake up! control yurself rich.. jeeze... we have probs with him sometimes... Romero: And for you... Ion Storm is planning on putting out a number of new games... will they be as 'open' and easily user-modifiable. ? Maybe I should of asked : What sort of new product can we expect from Hipnotic ? :) tits! lots of tits ...shit! tits rule maybe a few breasts.. ...what was the question? ...oh ya... well, make that an even # of breasts ...we're doing another 3D immersion ....with tits! We have some increidble stuff planned, I just WISH I could talk about it :) * sCary nods don't tell `em about the glasses, tom! levelord: shhhh You guys have probably seen a lot of levels that have been released on the net... What advise can you give people who want to attract the attention of the gaming markets... spend more time! Stop making quality levels, I want to keep my job. most of the internet stuff is wayyyy toooo simple levelord: can you be more specific maybe? More time on what aspects in particular ? focus on doing stuff that only has one room, with all the monsters in it..:) so, gig, noone's told you yet about coming in early tomorrow? Romero: We'd love to hear you input on this one, as another prospectice employer :) "prospective" levelord: hmm, earlier than the regular 4:00 Am.. thats kinda harsh well, you won't need to stay long oh, I get it :( :) ...just to pick up a piece of paper ...pink paper hahaha don't laugh, mr kansas hehe, I'm bringing this computer home tonight to do some work, ok? Alright.. another popular questions: what sort of comptuers do you guys work on.. ? I've already got 4 computers now pentiums lot's o' RAM, though regular old pentium 75s :) ...tom, your keyboard is sticky, BTW ...can you come in early, too, and wipe it off? levelord: Will do apreciated ...or, as they say up north... ...appreciated How long, on these big 'ol pentiums of yours does it take to fully QBSP/Light/VIS a level ? loki: levels with wide open areas can take 12+ hours for VIS ...john's maps go for about 5 minutes, though heh Levlord: Another popular questions for you... how *DO* you manage those big areas with the vis problems and high r_speeds ? with"out" :) sure, I tell you, you tell a friend,... ...and then I got no job! ...it just takes time to build them slowly and watch for the first signs of framerate disaster ...and you have to be a god ...a humble god ...and incredibly good-looking, humble god Okay... Giggler, Paradox: You guys have been quiet :) what do you guys HATE about editing ? the one part you with you could just make levelord do :) ya, tell `em, mike! well, aside from what we already make him do, I wish we didn't have to place ents for multiple skill levels it makes for a hell of alot of playtesting ...and don't forget all the mopping and sweeping it's a real hell over here loki: Ummm.. loki: getting lightsourcing to look right is kinda tough at times. wtf *** Service Agent on ClanHUB is now managing this channel framerate! Later guys! Gotta go kick some NaTaS ace! hhe lagged server ? ? hmmm :) ? rejoining from a netsplit later, john Bye guys. See ya soon! later john everyone say "bye-bye" "bye bye" "bye-bye" ...okay, now wave Bye John :) okay.. I think I'm going to finsih off here :) Clannet just can't seem to handle the load we're putting on it. we won't invite john next time I'd like to thank the hipnotic guys for comming out, and putting up with everything :) ya.. him and his big mouth Anything you guys want to say before you de-moderate the channel ? :) ..and let hell break lose ? :) actually, I really wish sCary would shut up.. this was a blast, loki, thanks to y`all let `em rip giggler: ya, him and his big mouth REember everyone: If you have any OTHER editing questions... Levelord is our "guru" on the worldcraft page at planetquake.. Send you're questions there and he'll give you some of his advice. item_ben: uhh sCary I wrote something for you.. its kind of obscene but here goes: --paradox is the BSP p1mp --romero is a quad wh0re --level0rd is the mountain p1mp --sCary is a wh0re -> *levelord* you guys gonna stick around fer a bit? answer q's from the teaming masses? giggler: you forgot to say "llama" and "w00d" * sCary spreads em --giggler is the Nice car wh0re
