FILE: dance.zip AUTHOR: Tony Hafner (Hafhead) Modified player model by Michael Scandizzo of clan Loki's Minions: http://www.fsgames.com/clan EMAIL: hafhead@geocities.com HOME: http://www.geocities.com/~hafhead/quake RESTRICTIONS: Contact me if you actually want to make anything more complicated that incorporates this (why you would want to, I do not know). Unpack the pakfile and see the readme in the source code directory. DESIGNED FOR: Registered Quake SPECIAL THANKS to ID for such a wonderful game that allows such silliness. INSTRUCTIONS: Create a directory under your Quake directory called "dance". Put pak0.pak in that directory. When you want to run it, run Quake with the additional parameters "-game dance". This is NOT a server-only patch, so all clients MUST add these parameters. DESCRIPTION: Dance is a patch that replaces the regular nailgun with a mind- control ray. This fearsome weapon, when striking an enemy player, causes that player to sing and dance for about seven seconds. During that time, the player cannot fire any weapons and his movement is greatly reduced. Since dancing is good for the soul, the dancer gets a bonus of 25% health if he lives long enough to complete the dance. Triggering impulse 42 will make you dance. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but the mind-control ray uses nails. I left it this way for a number of reasons. This is a quick silly patch, so live with the lack of realism. Note that since buttons and switches have no minds to control, the mind-control ray does not work on them. You'll have to use some other weapon to trigger these. Likewise, the brain waves of all Quake monsters are different from human brain waves and so they are immune. This makes this patch even more lame for single play- the net effect is that you lose the nailgun. TROUBLESHOOTING: You can verify that the server is running the patch by having any client pick up a nailgun. The nailgun is only slightly modified, so you should have no trouble identifying it. When you pick it up, you will get the message "You got the Mind- Control ray". If you instead get the message "You got the nailgun", then the server is not running the patch. If a client is not running the patch, the easiest way to tell is to have that player pick up the nailgun and fire it. If the word "dance" flashes on the top of the nailgun model while it is firing, the patch is working correctly. If the nailgun looks normal, the patch is not working correctly on that machine. Make sure that Quake is being run with the parameters "-game dance". Make sure that the "pak0.pak" file from this zipfile is in the directory "dance". Check my web pages to see if there is a new version. Maybe there was a bug and it is now fixed. My Quake pages are at: http://www.geocities.com/~hafhead/quake If you still can't get it to work, please don't mail me about it. If you have followed the simple directions and checked the brief troubleshooting section here, you have probably already done everything I could help you with. Mailing me won't help you. If you have installed patches before and know all about this sort of thing and still can't get this patch to work, go ahead and write me about it. Only do this if you are certain that the problem is in the patch itself and not your installation of it. My address is: hafhead@geocities.com KNOWN BUGS: Sometimes when a client joins the game, there is a pause of a few seconds while that player cannot move. You will be able to turn in place and look around, but do nothing else. Just ignore it and it will go away soon. One of the sound clips loops forever. Every once in a while, the music will stay on long past the dancing. This will also correct itself- after a few players jump, that sound channel will get overridden by grunting and the music will stop. Sometimes when a client joins the game, the client machine fails to connect and generates an error: Host_Error: CL_KeepaliveMessage: datagram wasn't a nop If you get this error, simply connect again- you don't have to exit Quake.
