Title : Quake DeathMatch Enhancer Filename : QDME11.ZIP Version : 1.1 - Fixed shotgun, lightning gun, and super nailgun balancing, and added simplified missile model (for faster framerates) as well as cool weapon pickup sound. Now built into the Quake v1.06 code instead of the old v1.01 code. New directory structure built. Disabled Quake's cheap built-in auto aiming feature. Stopped annoying "Necropolis" demo from playing every time you start the game and brought up the main game menu. Date : March 8th, 1998 Author : ETG Email : EWalker797@aol.com Credits : id Software, of course, and the other various QuakeC authors out there whose code I studied to make this modification. Also, thanks to the author of Qbot v1.1 (the best Quake computer opponent out there), from which the sound effect and missile model are also used in this mod. Type of Mod ----------- Quake C : yes Sound : no MDL : no Format of QuakeC ---------------- unified diff : no context diff : no .qc files : no progs.dat : yes Description of the Modification ------------------------------- Although Quake, made by id Software, is a great game technology-wise, its basic gameplay (both single player and DeathMatch) comes up lacking. Most of this is due to its poor weapon balancing, where certain weapons were clearly more powerful than others, leaving DeathMatch as a simple game of find-the- good-weapon. However, id Software was wise enough to leave an open door for users to alter this weapon setup as they wished. This modification does just that. It keeps the same basic structure of Quake (no new weapons or completely new features) but enhances the gameplay for both MultiPlayer and SinglePlayer games, putting the emphasis more on skill and intense combat rather than searching for the win-all killer weapon. After having created this enhancement, I have not gone back to playing ordinary Quake. The game's weapons are modified as follows: Axe - Power increased greatly. If you are lucky enough to sneak up on an opponent, you might possibly kill them with a single blow. Shotgun - Much more effective, like the shotgun in Doom. Can possibly kill a full-health player with as few as three shots. Super Shotgun - Now emphasizes close-range combat more than ever. When standing right next to an opponent with full health, a single shot can blow them into chunks. Becomes less effective as range increases. NailGun - Same damage given, but is now an immediate hit weapon, like the machinegun in Quake 2 or the chaingun in Doom. Super NailGun - Slightly faster firing rate and each individual spike causes more damage. Grenade Launcher - Nothing changed or altered. Rocket Launcher - The speed of the rockets has been cut nearly in half. This is not the same kill-all weapon it was before, but must now be used with some strategy and forethought in order to kill an opponent. Much like the original rocket launcher in Doom. LightningGun - The power has been doubled but the range has been halved. This weapon is now more or less a close-range weapon. The maximum amount of ammo has been cut to twenty. You must plan your attack carefully and use your cells sparingly, not just running around holding down the fire button. Although some of your favorite weapons may have lost substantial amounts of power, you should give this modification a try. You will see that after a couple games of DeathMatch the gameplay has been made ten times as fun as the original Quake. How to Install the Modification ------------------------------- Unzip the file QDME11.ZIP into your main Quake game directory (usually C:\QUAKE). Be sure you unzip with the directory structure retained, using the -D parameter if you are using PKUNZIP for Dos. The program will create a directory in your Quake directory called QDME. Other various files and branches will be contained in QDME. Then, instead of just typing QUAKE and pressing Enter to start the game, type QUAKE -GAME QDME and press Enter. The modification should then be in effect. Write me at EWalker797@aol.com with any comments or questions you may have. Thank you.
